Meta, TikTok and Google are moving commerce into the conversation
TikTok and Google are bringing purchases closer to their surfaces, while Meta connects business agents to operational tools. The question is not where payment happens, but how much of the relationship remains yours.
A brand’s website used to be the last step before purchase. TikTok and Google are bringing checkout closer to their own surfaces, while Meta connects agents to business tools. The contest is no longer only about conversion; it is also about data, margin and the post-purchase relationship.
In brief
TikTok introduced Buy Direct and Shopping Assistant to bring discovery and purchase into the app. Google limits UCP checkout to eligible merchants in the US, Canada and Australia. Meta is expanding Business Agent, but that does not confirm native checkout. Brands should prepare product data and operating rules while deciding what identity, margin and customer data they need to retain.
The website is no longer the only checkout
TikTok wants a viewer to move from a video to a purchase without leaving the app. Google wants products to be discovered and bought through AI Mode or Gemini. Meta wants a business agent to answer, recommend and close sales across its surfaces.
The friction goes down. The platform’s leverage goes up.
Conversational checkout is not just another payment method. It makes a platform the interface where the customer discovers a product, understands its value, makes a decision and receives confirmation. The visible checkout is only the final step. The strategic question is who owns the context.
Three platforms, three contracts
TikTok’s October 5 announcement described Buy Direct, an in-app checkout that lets customers buy from a brand without leaving TikTok, and Shopping Assistant, a conversational agent that handles product, shipping, sizing, availability and purchase guidance. TikTok is building the experience with commerce and payment partners including Shopify and Stripe.
Meta describes Business Agent as a layer that can recommend products, qualify leads and help close sales through connections with tools such as Shopify and Zendesk. Muse for Small Business also points toward agents connected to business tools and operational context. That expands AI’s role in the customer relationship, but it is not confirmation of native checkout in Messenger or Meta AI. The key question is not only what the agent can answer, but which permissions a brand grants it to check inventory, apply discounts, create orders and follow up.
Google’s UCP documentation is more explicit about the contract. Eligible merchants can place a checkout button on product listings in AI Mode and Gemini; the merchant remains the seller of record and customers use Google Pay. The current feature is limited to eligible markets, merchants and partners, including the US, Canada and Australia. It is not a Colombia launch promise.
What the brand should decide
A shorter checkout can improve conversion. It can also turn a sale into a one-off transaction if the brand does not receive identity, consent, order context and a path to the next conversation.
Before enabling any surface, answer:
- What are you renting: discovery, audience, payment, logistics or the relationship?
- Which data must return to your own systems?
- What is the net margin after fees, promotions, fulfillment and support?
- Which decisions require a human?
- What remains possible only in your direct channel?
A product feed is not the same thing as a commerce system. A feed can make a product discoverable. A commerce system knows whether the item is available, which price applies, what can be shipped, how to refund and what happens next.
Build the layer before the button
Create one source of truth for catalog, prices and inventory. Write explicit shipping, returns, promotion and approval rules. Connect the order lifecycle to the system that actually runs the business. Measure contribution margin and repeat relationship, not gross conversion alone.
For Latin American brands, preparation is the rational move while rollout remains uneven. When a connector becomes available, the choice should be based on control and economics, not the excitement of being first.
Frequently asked questions
What is conversational checkout? It is a shopping experience in which discovery, evaluation and payment can happen inside a conversation or digital surface, without the customer necessarily going through the merchant’s traditional website. A brand should confirm which identity, consent, orders and policies return to its own systems; where payment happens does not by itself determine who owns the ongoing relationship.
Is it available in Colombia? As of October 16, 2026, Google limits UCP checkout to eligible products and participating merchants in the United States, Canada and Australia. TikTok describes Buy Direct and Shopping Assistant as solutions subject to eligibility and testing opportunities. The cited sources announce neither availability in Colombia nor a launch date.
Can Meta already complete purchases in Messenger or Meta AI? Meta describes Business Agent as a tool connected to business systems that can recommend products and help close sales. That does not confirm native checkout in Messenger or Meta AI. Before integrating it, a brand should distinguish answering questions, assisting a sale and processing payment, since each stage requires different capabilities and permissions.
Pimentone’s relevant capabilities are Digital Architecture, Conversion Engines and AI Agents. The tool comes after the decision about which relationship the brand intends to keep. If you are evaluating how to prepare that architecture without giving up control of the channel, let’s talk about the next step.
