Shop MCP: your Shopify catalog is ready for compatible agents
Shopify now lets compatible agents find products and complete checkout with Shop Pay. Before opening that channel, make sure your catalog spells out variants, stock, delivery and returns so an agent never has to guess.
On October 13, Shopify opened a door that had been closed: an MCP-compatible agent can search its catalog, build a cart and complete payment with Shop Pay. The purchase can begin inside a conversation, without sending the shopper to the merchant’s storefront.
That changes the question for a retail brand. Driving traffic to a product page is no longer the whole job. The page must also make sense when an agent is the intermediary, when availability has to be trusted without visual context and when the relationship with the buyer may start outside the brand’s own domain.
What Shopify launched
Shop MCP is available at mcp.shop.com. Shopify’s technical announcement says the connection can search the Shopify Catalog, build carts and complete Shop Pay checkout through one MCP connection. Shopify describes a catalog with more than one billion products.
Catalog search does not require an API key. A signed-in shopper can use saved addresses and Shop Pay, while the agent presents the total and waits for confirmation before completing payment. The order appears in the merchant’s normal Shopify admin.
One operational detail deserves attention: the launch does not include webhooks for this flow. Shopify recommends polling get_checkout for status. For a brand with tight inventory or delivery promises, that is an integration decision, not a footnote.
On October 16, Shopify added UCP buyer-consent support to Cart and Checkout MCP. The fields cover analytics, preferences, marketing and the sale or sharing of data; purchase confirmation remains a separate transactional step. Each permission should be explicit and travel with the right context.
A product page is now an interface
A person can infer a lot from photography, tone and a conversation with a sales associate. An agent needs explicit signals. If a title does not separate variants, if the currency is unclear or if delivery appears only in an image, the system has to guess. The brand pays for the resulting ambiguity.
The practical minimum is straightforward: clear product and variant names, a final price and currency, live availability, delivery and return rules, consent records, and a reliable path from checkout state to fulfillment. Treat the catalog as structured product infrastructure, not copy pasted from a brochure.
Catalog visibility and owned agents are different bets
Shop MCP creates a shared discovery surface. A product may appear when someone asks an agent for a waterproof jacket in a certain size and price range. That is meaningful distribution because the recommendation happens close to the buying decision.
The merchant does not own the full conversation, though. It does not decide which competitor appears next, what context the agent retains or how the recommendation is framed. Catalog visibility is a distribution strategy.
An owned agent is a controlled channel. It can access brand-specific rules, connect to internal systems and escalate to a person with the right context. The distinction resembles the difference between a marketplace and a direct channel, even when both use the same inventory.
That is why this piece belongs next to our analysis of checkout inside Meta, TikTok and Google chats: payment is moving out of the product page. Shop MCP expands agent-readable discovery and checkout; the strategic question is what the brand still owns after the order.
Consent and escalation are part of the product
UCP provides buyer-consent fields for analytics, preferences, marketing and the sale or sharing of data. Purchase confirmation is a separate transactional step. That distinction matters for a brand selling across Latin America, where payment, logistics and privacy expectations can change from one market to the next.
Before confirmation, the agent should be able to state what is being bought, the final total, destination, return conditions and the permission being granted. Missing buyer information, 3DS, authentication or channel opt-in can require a handoff through continue_url to the merchant checkout.
That handoff is not a failure. It is a designed boundary. The customer should keep the relevant context and understand why the merchant’s checkout is now the safest place to finish.
A practical preparation sequence
Start with the twenty products that carry the most margin. Review their titles, variants, price, currency, stock, delivery and returns as if a stranger had thirty seconds to recommend them.
Then test the awkward cases: an unavailable size, two currencies, delivery outside the main service area, a promotion that expires today and a product that needs installation. Agent commerce is judged by its exceptions.
Define who owns the order when the origin is an agent. The order may arrive in Shopify admin, but service teams still need to understand that the shopper did not browse the storefront and may expect the agent’s promise to be remembered.
Finally, choose what the brand wants to own. If the goal is distribution, improve catalog clarity, policies and checkout monitoring. If the goal is relationship, use Shop MCP as an acquisition path and build an owned agent for explanation, comparison and support.
Pimentone designs owned digital channels for premium businesses, connecting architecture, conversion and operations. In agent commerce, the decision is not simply whether to appear in MCP; it is which parts of the journey can happen on a shared surface and which relationships the brand should continue managing through its own channel. That decision starts with a digital architecture built to connect systems, conversion engines aligned with operations and, where useful, AI agents designed for their context. If you are assessing that architecture for your business, let’s talk.
Frequently asked questions
What is Shop MCP?
It is Shopify’s public connection for compatible Model Context Protocol agents to search products, build carts and complete purchases with Shop Pay. Discovery can happen outside the storefront while the order remains in Shopify.
Does Shop MCP require a merchant to build its own agent?
No. A merchant can make products available in the catalog that agents query. An owned agent is useful when the brand needs control over context, assistance and post-purchase relationship.
What happens when the agent lacks buyer information?
The flow can escalate. Shopify documents cases such as additional authentication, 3DS, missing buyer input or channel opt-in; the agent can send the shopper to a merchant checkout through continue_url.
Does Shop MCP have order webhooks?
Shopify’s launch announcement says webhooks are not available for this flow at launch. Merchants should poll get_checkout for status and design monitoring accordingly.
Is this available in every Latin American market?
The connection and documentation are global, but Shop Pay, payment methods, tax, shipping and policy coverage vary by market. Verify local support before promising a complete agent checkout.
